OVERVIEW of the Isaac Newton International Academy
The Isaac Newton International Academy charter proposal aims to be a K-5th grade public school (opening as K-2) and will aim to instill values that promote a permanent sense of civic belonging and personal achievement, and an international outlook through modern world language acquisition and multicultural understanding at an early age. Students will be encouraged to develop their own natural curiosity for how the world and the universe functions while learning new concepts through the Scientific Method of Inquiry.
Students will also be provided opportunities to practice expressing themselves more confidently through art, music and other media to develop effective communication skills. Teachers will be addressing the Multiple Intelligences of their students, that is, identifying and teaching to their strengths, and assisting students in identified areas which may need improvement.
Students will be reading, writing and speaking at grade level in at least one language by third grade, and in both languages by fifth grade. Students will spend at least half of their instructional day in Spanish, and they will study some of their subjects in Spanish and some in English. All students will learn to read and write proficiently in English and Spanish. Beginning in at least 3rd grade, students will be learning a third language twice weekly. The languages offered will be decided by parent and student surveys, and the availability of credentialed teachers for the selected language(s).
Educational partnerships will also be sought with local and nationwide businesses to strengthen the Science Program, including organizations which have previously supported public education such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Loma Linda University and Medical Center, Southern California Edison, Union Pacific Railroad and Metrolink, among others.
The Isaac Newton International Academy will seek accreditation from the International Baccalaurete Organisation (IB), and thematic, integrated instruction will be based on the Primary Years Programme of the IB. To this end, teachers will be highly trained in the methods of shared inquiry of the Primary Years Programme. For more information about the IB, please visit their website at http://www.ibo.org/. Teachers will also be trained in the methods of the Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) which allows powerful group and individual instruction of target vocabulary at various levels simultaneously.
We are grateful to all parents and supporters who believe in the Isaac Newton International Academy as a unique opportunity to learn, to be supported and guided for a 21st century education within a challenging academic environment.
